Welcome to Center Avenue UMC. We are a faith community which has been in existence since 1892. Since that time, the world has changed a great deal as has the community of Pitcairn itself. One thing that remains the same is the love of Christ. Our congregation has a strong history of demonstrating the character of Christ to the community around us. As such, our mission is to make the heart and hope of Christ visible in Pitcairn. Come join us in mission, discipleship and worship!

Ministries

The following is a list of ministries offered at CAUMC. These ministries are designed to provide community, a place to serve, healing and/or discipleship opportunities. Our hope is that the info provided here will help you take a "next step" in your walk with Jesus Christ.

Bible Studies
A variety of topical Bible studies are offered year round. A day time Bible study is offered on Tuesdays at 1 pm. An evening Bible study is offered on Mondays at 7 pm. No previous experience with the Bible is necessary to participate.

Pitcairn Food Pantry
Although not housed onsite, the Food Pantry is one of the ministries for which this church is responsible. Opportunities are plentiful for serving or giving to the Food Pantry.

Circles
Circles is one of the ways by which our congregation reaches out to its local community in a way that reflects Jesus’ love and compassion. Circles seeks to empower and equip the local community to address the issues of poverty as we help move individuals from a place of chaos to a more stable life. There are numerous opportunities to serve in this ministry from providing a meal or childcare, to assisting with budgets or taxes, to befriending a person in poverty as they work toward achieving their goals. Please see the Circles page for more details.

Student and Young Adult Ministry
One area of this ministry is for Christ-servants who have a heart to see High School and Middle School students grow and fall in love with Jesus. The second focus for this ministry is for servants to connect with adults aged 18-35 and help them find meaningful ways to remain connected with the Jesus they learned to love when they were younger.

Administration and Behind the Scenes Roles:
Serving behind-the-scenes with administrative and office tasks (copying, cutting, mailing) as well as special projects such as organizing and recruiting help for fund-raisers and preparing for special events.

Frequently Asks Questionsabout Center Avenue United Methodist Church

How should I dress when attending CAUMC?
There is no dress code.  Some dress casually. Some dress up when coming to worship. Come and be with us in whatever style you choose to wear.

Where are the bathrooms? There is a unisex bathroom on the level of our worship center. Its entrance is in the entryway on the ramp side of the building. Men’s and Women’s restrooms are located on the Fellowship Hall level, near the kitchen.

What is expected with giving to the church?
One of the ways people live out their discipleship is by giving. God created all of us with a spiritual need to give. People  are given the opportunity to give weekly, through regular or special offerings and other ministry projects. We are always working toward the tithe (10% of gross income), as set forth by scripture. Because we believe in scriptural teaching, we believe that we should be traveling the journey toward the tithe as a way of being obedient to God. Whenever we give, wherever we are in this journey of giving, we are participating in God's mission.

Are there certain expectations if I participate and attend Center Avenue Church?
We live into our discipleship...following Jesus.  We do this through attending worship weekly, unless sick or out of town. We do this through serving in a ministry  area.  We are all encouraged to have an active prayer life and supported in various ways as we develop that prayer life.  We strive to live our lives in such a way that our lives reflect God and God's way, but acknowledge that all of us are sinners, undeserving of God’s grace, but receiving it through belief in Jesus. Because we have received much, we expect to respond to each other with grace within the worship and work of this community.

What are the worship celebration times?
We currently have one worship celebration at 10:00 am on Sundays in the sanctuary, which is a mix of traditional and contemporary styles. An innovative worship celebration which targets and is responsive to the surrounding community is in development and will be offered at 11:30 am on Sunday mornings. Sunday school for all ages is offered at 9 am through the school year. Sunday school for adults is offered at 9 am year-round.

How do I find my way around? There are brown signs throughout the building that give direction. Or just ask someone, they will gladly give directions.

Can I take Communion? All are welcome to the table of the Lord. There are no exclusions. Holy Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of the month.

How do I get to talk to a pastor or staff person?
Please call or email to request an appointment.

Can I come to studies and events other than worship? Yes. All studies and events are open to all. You do not need to have experience to attend our Bible studies. Bible studies are offered on Monday evenings at 7 pm and Tuesday afternoons at 1 pm in the church basement.

Can I get involved and take part in the life of the church? Yes. Please see the link at the bottom of the page or visit our blog for information on opportunities within the church.
